Kent Lathy gives $4 million gift to Pacific

(June 11 , 2003) -- Kent Lathy of Clovis, Calif. has donated real estate valued at $4 million to University of the Pacific’s “Investing in Excellence” campaign. It is the sixth largest gift in the University’s history. Proceeds from the sale of the property will be used to support the construction of a biological sciences facility and new university center as well as endow Pacific’s Brubeck Institute.

“I valued my time in Stockton and the positive influence it had on my life,” Lathy said. “I recognize the value of education and would much rather have my estate support higher education than pay taxes to the government.”

Lathy, a retiree from the City of Fresno Public Works Department, attended Stockton College, now known as San Joaquin Delta College, from 1947 to 1949. Stockton College was housed on what is now Pacific’s south campus. Students enrolled at the school often participated in Pacific programs.Prior to this gift Lathy and his sister Claire Hughson established an endowed scholarship at Pacific in memory of their mother, Doris Reyburn Lathy, aunts Adda Reyburn Thompson, Pacific class of ’29, and Margaret Reyburn Collis, Pacific class of ’27. “Kent Lathy has demonstrated his personal commitment to Pacific and the generations of students that will benefit from his generosity. Pacific is deeply grateful to him for his leadership in our Campaign,” said University President Donald V. DeRosa.“Investing in Excellence” seeks to raise $200 million in a seven-year period making it the largest Campaign in Pacific’s 151-year history. Efforts began in 2000 with the Campaign officially going public April 4, 2003, having already raised $103 million in gifts from alumni, parents, friend and philanthropic foundations. Goals of the fundraising effort include $83.3 million for endowments, $106.7 million for new and renovated facilities and $10 million for annual gifts to the University.
