Naive Realism

People in every culture around the world can be described as naive realists, meaning that they believe that everyone else in the world sees the world (or should!) and interprets events as they do. For them there is only one reasonable explanation for everything. When they discover that other do NOT share those views, the tendency is to denigrate those who are different. Implicit in such a view is the belief that if one culture is inherently better, then all others must compare unfavorably or lack some essential quality that one's own culture possesses.
